Sony Classical has announced the release of Summer Night Concert 2022, featuring Vienna Philharmonic, Andris Nelsons and Gautier Capuçon!

On June 16th, 2022, the annual Summer Night Concert took place. Since 2008, it has been hosted outdoors every year. The “Concert of Europe” ran from 2004 to 2007 and was the series before this.

The performance will take place in the beautiful garden of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria. Famous conductors including Georges Prêtre, Daniel Barenboim, Franz Welser-Möst, Lorin Maazel, Christoph Eschenbach, Zubin Mehta, Semyon Bychkov, Gustavo Dudamel, and Daniel Harding have taken the podium at this event in the past.

The Summer Night Concert’s exceptional musical quality is complemented by its beautiful scenic setting in the Baroque garden of Schönbrunn, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This performance represents the pinnacle of classical music. It will be broadcast live in over 80 countries, reaching millions of viewers and listeners worldwide.

This year’s 2022 Summer Night Concert by the Vienna Philharmonic was the first to be performed in front of a sold-out crowd since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

This year’s Vienna Philharmonic performance, entitled “Musical Heritage of Europe,” included the world debuts of works by two contemporary European composers: the Tango for Symphony Orchestra by Latvian composer Arturs Maskats and the Farewell Waltz by acclaimed Ukrainian composer Mykola Lysenko.

Additionally, fan favorites by composers ranging from Beethoven and Rossini to Smetana and Dvoák were included.

World-renowned cellist Gautier Capuçon’s debut at the Summer Night Concert this year. Since 2015, Gautier Capuçon has been a regular with the Vienna Philharmonic. Modern cello has a great advocate in Gautier Capuçon, one of the world’s finest musicians. He was sharing the stage with some of the best musicians and conductors in the world.

Capuçon routinely debuts newly commissioned pieces and plays a wide range of works from the cello repertoire as part of his quest to broaden and diversify the instrument’s canon. Capuçon performed with the Concertgebouworkest under Myung-when Chung and the Cleveland Orchestra under Michael Tilson Thomas in the 2021/22 season.

He also appeared with the Vienna Philharmonic under Alain Altinoglu, the Munich Philharmonic under Giedre lekyte, and the New York Philharmonic under Yu Long. The Paris Philharmonie and the Wiener Konzerthaus have appointed him as an Artist-in-Residence. Further, Capuçon performs in festivals all around the globe, such as the Enescu, Rostropovich, Prague Spring, St. Denis, and Evian festivals.

Andris Nelsons have been a frequent and well-received guest conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic since their first collaboration in October 2010. He has led the orchestra in performances at the Vienna Musikverein, the Salzburg Festival, and on tours across Asia, the Americas, and Europe.

He has taken the podium at the Vienna Philharmonic more than eighty times. Recently, he presided over the highly acclaimed 2020 New Year’s Concert. Andris Nelsons serves as the Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Gewandhauskapellmeister of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig.
