Leader of the Liberal Party in Quebec, Dominique Anglade, has urged those who have accused Arcade Fire’s Win Butler of sexual misconduct to take their allegations to the police.

An election is scheduled for October 3 in Quebec, and Anglade was asked about the claims against the Montreal artist when she was out campaigning on Wednesday morning.

She called the latest article in the U.S. music magazine Pitchfork “serious claims” and said she was “very troubled” by the story.

Anglade stressed the importance of “verbalizing claims” and “filing complaints.”

A report about four persons accusing Butler, 42, of unwanted sexual contact was published by Pitchfork on Saturday. According to Pitchfork’s sources, the claimed interactions involved age and power disparities, as well as unwanted advances.

One victim claims Butler sexually attacked them twice in 2015 when they were 21 and he was 34. The Canadian Press was unable to confirm the validity of the report’s claims independently.

Butler maintains he has never pushed himself on a woman or asked for sexual favors.

He made a statement confessing he had contacts outside of his marriage to bandmate Régine Chassagne and stating he had battled mental health difficulties and drinking between 2015 and 2020.

It’s safe to say that Chassagne has known Anglade since they were kids. They banded together to form the Kanpe Foundation, which provides aid to those living in rural Haiti.

Chassagne’s foreword to Anglade’s biography, “Ce Quebec qui m’habite,” was released just last year.

The Liberal leader stated at a news briefing, “In any circumstance like this, I’ve always maintained, ‘Victims need to be able to speak out, they need to be able to condemn and register a complaint,’ so this doesn’t change my perspective.”

In a statement to Pitchfork, Chassagne expressed her love and support for her musician husband.

For sure, he has never touched a woman without her permission, and I know in my heart that he would never do so. In other words, he got lost and then found his way back. I made this comment because I am so in love with him and the life we have built together.

As of this week, Arcade Fire has been temporarily removed from playlists at some Canadian radio stations.
