Blade Runner 2099: Amazon greenlights ‘provocative’ for TV Series sequel

Because Ridley Scott is an executive producer for the programme, Amazon claims it “will preserve the intelligence, concepts, and spirit of its cinematic predecessors.”

Amazon Studios is developing a Blade Runner TV series, the company has announced, with the film’s director, Ridley Scott, serving as executive producer.

Based on the success of the original 1982 film and Denis Villeneuve‘s Blade Runner 2049, a limited series titled Blade Runner 2099 is in the works.

Blade Runner 2099 will have Silka Luisa, who has previously worked on Halo and adapted and ran the sci-fi thriller Shining Girls for Apple TV+, at the helm.

The Blade Runner rights holders at Alcon Entertainment have praised Luisa’s “provocative plot” for the programme.

Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, co-CEOs and co-founders of Alcon, stated in a statement, “We recognise that we have a very high bar to meet with this next edition [sic].” We hope that the new version of Blade Runner, created in collaboration with Silka and our colleagues at Amazon and Scott Free Productions, will live up to that level and excite fans.

Amazon Studios’ chief of global television, Vernon Sanders, hailed Scott’s 1982 picture as “one of the best and most important science-fiction movies of all time.” Sign up for the good things with our overview of must-reads, pop culture, and ideas for the weekend, every Saturday morning.

Sanders: “We are honoured to present this continuation of the Blade Runner franchise, and we are confident that by working with Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, and the extraordinarily talented Silka Luisa, Blade Runner 2099 will uphold the intellect, themes, and spirit of its film predecessors.”

In February, Amazon said it was working on a Blade Runner 2099 adaptation. Although an anime adaptation of Blade Runner, titled Blade Runner: Black Lotus, aired on Adult Swim in the United States last year, this will be the first live-action television adaptation of the franchise. Critical reception for the 2032-set concert was divided.

Amazon has placed another large bet, this time on Blade Runner 2099, after the success of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. There was a rumoured $465 million price tag for creating the first season of the fantasy smash hit.
