Recently, when SS Rajamouli began the Oscars campaign for his film RRR, he discussed the feedback he’d gotten from his Hollywood counterparts.

This year, one of the most successful Bollywood blockbusters, RRR, was released thanks to the efforts of director SS Rajamouli. The legendary director’s best work told the tale of two rebels who plot retribution against the British. The historical drama garnered attention from viewers in the West and delighted Indian audiences. Recently, when the Oscars campaign for the film got underway, director SS Rajamouli spoke about the reaction he got from his fellow Hollywood filmmakers.

Rajamouli was recently interviewed at the Toronto International Film Festival, where he discussed the film’s success in the west and its ability to cross cultural boundaries. Rajamouli, when asked about his films’ international success, said he considered making more films set in Asia after the Bahubali film trilogy was successful in Japan. But he was unprepared for his newest film’s success in the West. Never in my wildest dreams did I think RRR would be a hit with Western audiences,” he said.

SS Rajamouli talks about his reaction to RRR’s popularity

During the conversation, SS Rajamouli said that he received messages from all around the globe following the release of RRR. Slowly but surely, the handful of answers grew into the hundreds as word of his directing spread among filmmakers, reviewers, and storytellers. Filmmakers Scott Derrickson, James Gunn, and Edgar Wright, among others, have praised Rajamouli for his directing. The filmmaker responded to the tremendous reaction by saying, “At first I assumed there would be a wide gap in sensibility, but then I realized that there could be some overlap. To be quite honest, I’m still trying to get my head around it.”

Ram Charan and Jr. NTR featured as independence warriors in RRR, while Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, and Shriya Saran also had significant parts. It is presently anticipated that the film will compete at the Oscars, however, this will only occur if it is included in India’s official submission. The film would enter the running for Best International Film if it were chosen.
