Met Gala 2023 Theme: Karl Lagerfeld, the legendary German fashion designer who passed away in February 2019 at the age of 85, will be honored at the 2023 Met Gala.
At a press conference held Friday morning from Lagerfeld’s picture studio in France for editors in town for Paris Fashion Week, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute benefit revealed its topic.
According to a press release from the Met, the exhibit will be officially titled “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” and will feature approximately 150 of Lagerfeld’s greatest outfits from across his prolific six-decade career. These include designs for labels such as Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, and his own eponymous label.

Lagerfeld’s renowned drawings from his library will accompany the majority of the ensembles.
Lagerfeld’s frequent use of sketches as a means of communication with his design associates provided inspiration for the topic assembled by the Institute’s chief curator Andrew Bolton.

Met Gala 2023 Theme: Every design in his life was a drawing, Bolton said to CNN when the news broke. “And I thought, “These are so delightful, so whimsical, so impressionistic.” when I first saw the drawings. However, I failed to appreciate that they included such specifics as the placement of a shoulder seam or the size of a sleeve. Additionally, (his team) had a complete understanding of the significance of each line and dot.”

The Met Gala, also known as “the Oscars of fashion,” is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, which is now formally known as The Anna Wintour Costume Center in honor of Vogue’s editor-in-chief, who has served as a chair member of the gala every year since 1995.

Met Gala 2023 Theme: At the invitation-only event, fashionistas wait with bated breath to see how the evening’s A-listers will interpret the evening’s subject via their red carpet attire. According to Vogue, the event “challenges celebrities, designers, and change-makers to create costumes that serve as both a fashion statement and a monument to the notion.”
In the past, individual tickets cost $30,000 and tables cost about $275,000.
Even though the Gala has been since 1948, it wasn’t until the 1970s that the displays started having a consistent focus. Previous themes have included “Camp: Notes on Fashion” in 2020, which featured outrageously tacky outfits that tested the boundaries of fashion, and “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” in 2021, which celebrated the expressiveness of the American people via clothing.
For the 2022 Met Gala, the subject was “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” and the dress code was “gilded elegance and white tie to evoke the time period between 1870 and 1890.” (known as the Gilded Age New York).
Met Gala 2023 Theme: Celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep, Rihanna, and Amal Clooney have all attended the Gala in the past, but this year’s co-chairs have not yet been revealed.

Lagerfeld was a legend in the fashion world, instantly recognizable in his trademark all-black ensemble, oversized black eyeglasses, and white hair.
Lagerfeld famously told The New York Times in 2015 that he would “die on the spot” rather than retire. He labored till the end, just as his predecessor Gabrielle Chanel did before her.
While he didn’t stick around to accept his last Paris Haute Couture bow in January 2019, he did create the collection and provide direction to his employees at Fendi for its next autumn ready-to-wear line.
Met Gala 2023 Theme: Lagerfeld not only designed clothes but also shot and directed commercials for the companies he helped build. He worked with all the greatest models and actors, from Claudia Schiffer to Kristen Stewart and beyond, photographing the subjects that inspired him.
May 1st will be the date of theMet Gala 2023 Theme. The show is open to the public from May 5 until July 16.
