The Witches of Eastwick: Susan Sarandon “Couldn’t Deal with Them Suing Me”

The Witches of Eastwick: Many classic films have Susan Sarandon as a star. Did you know the actor only agreed to participate in The Witches of Eastwick so the production company wouldn’t sue him?

What is ‘The Witches of Eastwick’ about?

Sarandon, Michelle Pfeiffer, Cher, and Jack Nicholson appeared in the film adaptation of John Updike’s book The Witches of Eastwick. The film follows three witchy best friends, all of whom are single. They unwittingly bring an unknown visitor to town one night. The rivalry among the witches for his love and attention puts their relationship at risk.

Trying to imagine the film sans Sarandon is almost impossible. The actress reveals she didn’t want to play The Witches of Eastwick role in the Vanity Fair video from 2022.

Why Susan Sarandon was almost sued by the studio making ‘The Witches of Eastwick’

Sarandon said, “I was cast in Cher’s role first.” That’s when George [Miller, the film’s director] phoned and said, ‘How would you feel about playing this other part?'” “And I was living in Italy, and I went off to Italy,” he continued.

Sarandon said she was adamant about not switching roles. The performer had valid concerns about making the transition.

Megyn Kelly had opinions on both Jordan Peterson and vaginas during the Super Bowl.

I can’t play an instrument, and [that character] needs to play an instrument,” Sarandon said. Second of all, I think the finest sequences are the ones starring Jack [Nicholson].

The actress flatly refused to switch roles and said she had heard nothing more on the matter. When Sarandon arrived in Los Angeles to begin shooting, she discovered the switch had already been done without her knowledge.

By the time I got to L.A., I was no longer playing the character I was cast as she said. Not only that, but they also wouldn’t let me escape. And I had to take cello lessons, which terrified my 18-month-old daughter every time her teacher visited since I was making such a terrible noise.

To elaborate, Sarandon said, “I couldn’t cope with them suing me. This is why I decided to remain and make friends with everyone. Despite the fact that the singer had taken her role, she still felt she owed the most to her co-star Cher.

That gold outfit was Cher’s, and I owe a great debt of gratitude to her for sharing her wig and wardrobe with me. Cher wore the wig. Since my character didn’t read the whole screenplay when I received it, it was really helpful in figuring out who I was supposed to be. Thanks, Cher!

Does anyone know how much “The Witches of Eastwick” earned?

Despite Sarandon’s initial displeasure with her recast role in The Witches of Eastwick, it seems that she, Cher, and Pfeiffer formed a close friendship on set. The overwhelmingly positive reception the film received undoubtedly also softened the blow of the changeover of roles.

The Witches of Eastwick received many nominations for prizes that would recognize both its talented cast and its groundbreaking technical achievements. Over $63 million was produced from its theatrical release, and the film is still widely regarded as a masterpiece.
