Vinay Shukla’s Documentary ‘While We Watched’
The greatest documentaries from Korea and Asia are honored with the Cinephile Award for their presentation in the Wide Angle showcase.
The winner is decided by a panel of students representing film studies from six Busan area institutions.
It’s been said that “While We Watched” is a tense newsroom thriller that follows television journalist Kumar as he goes about his daily duties in a deteriorating world of truth and falsehood.
According to the official synopsis, “While We Watched” is “a daring, contemporary, and internationally relevant documentary” because it “invites viewers to evaluate their own duty and guilt via the prism of its protagonist, a man clutching onto integrity even as everything comes apart.”
Vinay Shukla expressed his “overwhelm” at the victory in a statement.
“A debt of gratitude is due to the Busan International Film Festival, its attendees, and its judging panel. For the last four years, I have been holed up in my apartment making constant progress on this project. My group of workers proved to be very devoted.
We set out to create a cinematic experience that would explore the mental and emotional toll of producing and consuming news in all its forms. The procedure was lengthy and demanding. Due to the length of time needed to complete filming, I leased a house on the outskirts of Delhi and relocated there “quote from the director of the film.”
It was a roller coaster of emotions for the crew, Vinay Shukla said, dealing with the coronavirus epidemic. Their “truest companion” at the time was the documentary.
“Knowing that the film is being shown all around the globe and gaining new fans is an incredible high.
Since our debut last month, we have already won two awards. Both audiences in Busan and Toronto gave us standing ovations and clapped after our screenings. I appreciate it very much. A huge debt of gratitude is owed to everyone who supported our picture “Moreover, he said.”
While We Watched is a British production, produced by LONO Studio and BRITDOC Films.
