Nurses in the NICU publicly shamed Meghan Trainor because she was using antidepressants.

Meghan Trainor is speaking up about the stigma associated with mental health issues. After Riley, the singer’s 1-year-old daughter, had trouble eating, the family moved to a NICU. She recently told Romper how the nurses made her feel guilty about the drugs she was taking.

Her physicians assured her that taking antidepressants at the lowest effective dosage throughout pregnancy was completely safe. Seriously, it was messed up. What was wrong was unknown since no label existed. He just refused to rouse himself from sleep. They made it clear that Riley had complete control over his own wake-up time. As an example: “Really? I mean, ‘Can’t you simply zap him and get him up?'”

Women are disproportionately subjected to the stigma of being embarrassed by medical staff. One research from 2014 at the University of California, San Diego found that female patients are more likely to be made to feel guilty or ashamed by their doctors. According to a poll of college students, 26% of women and 15% of men respectively reported feeling “shamed” by their doctor.

Negative emotions are always felt if a patient believes their doctor is attempting to instill feelings of guilt or embarrassment. We saw zero encouraging responses… Even when they do, tough love and shame aren’t always effective. Christine Harris, a professor of psychology in the Department of Social Sciences at the University of California, San Diego, said in a statement that “they may be counter-productive.”

Meghan Trainor is changing drastically because of motherhood. The pop artist said in a February interview with Parents that the ordeal has made her a more experimental composer interested in exploring new forms of storytelling. She’s also devoted to being open and honest about the challenging aspects of motherhood, including the many times she’s struggled mightily to breastfeed.

Asking, “When do you check it up on Google or YouTube? “They don’t tell you why it may be bad,” Meghan Trainor said. I can tell you why it may not be good: Sometimes a baby’s mouth is too large for your nipples. I had no idea it was even possible for humans to do that!
